I have a cd of Michael Jackson when he was young. Then I look at him now and wonder, where did it began? Why did he reject his black skin? And why did he do it with such ferosity? I heard that the rest of his body was black and every morning nurses have to powder it white. Also, why would he adopt the whitest kids?

At least we've gotten to the point at which we are admitting that those aren't Michael Jackson's damn kids.

And I see Michael Jackson as a regurgitation of our community. Our color complex; well we revered him and he vomited our shit up right back into our faces. He is such the paradigm of exactly what we need to fix.

To add to that; I see the whole Michael Jackson thing like this: he was taught that blackness was ugly; prominent wide noses, curly hair, thicker lips, all that was supposed to be ugly. Other blacks who were taught this mentality decided to breed out their blackness; they were ugly/nasty/unacceptable; well then the next generation would be "better" because they would breed that shit out by mating with non-whites. It's like Michael Jackson was like, "you think I should marry a 'white/nonblack bitch'"? Well, fuck you, I'll be that bitch. And the attendant excuses that would have accompanied the more accepted "breeding out" solution: "oh, they're just in love/that's all he was able to find" fell by the wayside with his decision.

With Michael, we are seeing the raw, unadulterated failure of our community to embrace the beauty of our own race. And the result (shown in his appearance) is ugly, unnatural, beastlike, and sick.

He is us.

Thanks Tonya for reading through all the typos, especially this one: "well then the next generation would be "better" because they would breed that shit out by mating with non-whites."

Was supposed to say, "by mating with non-blacks."

I'm down with you Black_Wisdom.

For now, at least . I fight like crazy and am rarely civil when doing so.

But looking at Michael Jackson, this is going to sound nutty, but I get the same feeling I get when I have had the rare privilege of interacting with so-called "developmentally challenged" people, especially autistic people. The way they see the world: everything is literal. They don't go for the subtexts: all the abstract and unspoken reasoning, because in reality, they can't. They don't have the capacity to do so. So the way that they look at the world is so beautiful and so special because they take all this shit at face value. They don't absorb bullshit; the hypocrisy doesn't fly with them because they truly cannot process it. That's how I look at what Michael Jackson has done to himself.

With Michael Jackson, just look at what he's saying to us as black people: you worship whites, you hate blackness, fine, I'll be white, I'll hate blackness too, literally, and all of that white worship and blackness hating will be purely reflected on me, literally. No bullshit colorstruck marriages or children; I am going to literally interpret what the doctrine of black inferiority does to me as a black person.

How can we interpret this as anything but an indictment of ourselves and the bullshit that we pass on to our kids, generation after fucking generation without even really considering what we are truly doing to ourselves.

Yup, Kola, he has internalized the neurosis. Furthermore, he's regurgitated, vomited it back up in our faces in one of the most pure expressions of black pain that I've seen. I'm not excusing his pedophilia or anything like that, but in terms of the decisions that he has made with regards to "this is how I will look so that I will be acceptable to other people," it's almost genius: the awesome, awful, painful, difficult to look at, performance at that is his current appearance. Rather than just saying "is wacko jacko crazy," we have to ask, "what does this say about us, just how ugly have we become as represented by Michael Jackson's falling-off nose?" Fucking powerful.

I've said before in other contexts about MJ, but I think at some point we will find out "when [and how/why] it all began"--and that will include his stance towards his Blackness and his sexuality.

I do not discount some of the more macro-level causes of his transformation and more recent troubles that some of you are talking about. But I also think there has been something in his past that had a more direct psychological effect.

Yvettep, what you are saying is almost certainly true; there's nothing about Joe Jackson that would convince me that that man is not a psycho nutjob. I couldn't imagine being raised by a piece of shit like him.

But I view Michael Jackson's appearance as almost a living embodiment of performance art. With every surgery, he is literally vomiting our hypocrisy as black people right back up into our faces. We have no others to blame but ourselves. Why do we try so hard and do so much to convince people like him that they are ugly? We can't get mad when our own shit is thrown right back at us, in the form of the grotesque transformation of one of our former heroes. He'd be much more acceptable had he married a nonblack/less black woman and pushed his pathologies onto his seed. But that's not what he did. He pushed OUR collective pathologies right back into our faces and is subliminally asking us is this is right, is Godly, is the truth.

We need to check ourselves.

a living embodiment of performance art

This is excellent. And yes, I would agree with it. I have been working on a piece where I tie in MJ's changes/recent situation to a concept developed by one of my profs called "ambiguous loss." That is where someone is either (1) present physically but "absent" psychologically (e.g., w/dementia), or (b) absent physically but present psychologically (e.g., MIA soldiers).

Don't know if I'll ever get back to that piece. But in the meantime I like your performance art metaphor, too. The two might be related, even...

Very interesting. I'd definitely read something like that; in fact, I'd be eager to read your dissertation when it's finished.

But I think with Michael Jackson, people, especially black people, try so fucking hard to ignore the humongous ass elephant in the room: hmmm, now why would someone use his riches to literally morph his appearance into something that is less identifiably black? Couldn't be the colorist bullshit that we indoctrinate our kids into like a cult? No, never that! He's just crazy!!! Yeah, right.

We're looking at the ugly, putrid result of our own pathologies, as created by whites and maintained by both whites and us. Jackson is truly the "man in the mirror." Too many people would rather turn away in disgust rather than examine what they themselves are perpetuating which created someone like him. Michael's wealth and probably at a genius level of brilliance/artistic talent so his message is obvious and stark. But how many kids, without his riches and talent, go to bed praying for "good hair," squeezing their noses to make them thinner? The ugliness in Jackson's current appearance is the ugliness that is in us.

SS - I give up on MJ's irrational behavior. I do know that his excuses about how his dad beat him and made him work seem very lame to me. If other people can get beat by their parents, grow up broke and turn out normal - I don't know why he thinks folks should feel sorry for him.

On the child indecency charges, I believe he's a pervert. After the first time he was accused in 1993, if I were him there's no way I would let my hired help leave me alone with any children to accuse me of anything again. There wouldn't have been any children around anyway.

Ms. Kola - Those are some CREEPY pix! Do you know if his nose is really prosthetic?

Yeah, I read that the tip of his nose is GONE, so they have a prosthetic over it.

So sad.

I used to loathe Michael Jackson. Now I feel so much compassion and pity.

I've been saying that FOR YEARS--and now I am so happy to know that somebody else gets it. People do not understand it but it is 100% true.

I was SO HAPPY when he married that Ms. Rowe (was that her name?) woman.

So much for people's excuses that they don't marry black women because they're fat and ugly and don't try to make themselves up.

LOL

(No offense to Ms. Rowe personally).

New York Daily News - http://www.nydailynews.com/front/story/396950p-336402c.html

His brother admits Jacko's 'thing for young children'
BY MICHELLE CARUSO
DAILY NEWS WEST COAST BUREAU CHIEF
Sunday, March 5th, 2006

LOS ANGELES - Jermaine Jackson feared his kid brother Michael might be guilty of child molestation, but backed him at trial because he thought the pop star would commit suicide in prison, according to a bombshell book proposal obtained by the Daily News.
In a tell-all outline shopped to publishers just weeks after Michael's arrest in November 2003, Jermaine described the Pop King as a sometimes out-of-control drug and booze abuser with a calculating mean streak and "a thing for young children."

The eight-page proposal for "Legacy: Surviving the Best and the Worst," lists Michael Jackson's preferred substances as Vicodin, Demerol, codeine, Percocet, cocaine, Jack Daniels and wine.

"Does he really know what he does with these kids?" Jermaine wondered.

"I don't want to tell you my brother's innocent. I am not certain that he is," Jermaine said in the tome-teaser drafted by author Stacy Brown, who co-authored "Michael Jackson: The Man Behind the Mask" with the singer's former publicist, Bob Jones.

But Jermaine's still-unpublished tale is the ultimate insider look at the troubled star.

He admits that the family has protected Jacko's image and says that Jackson also cheats, lies and even changed the color of his skin.

Even the pop star's behavior with his own nephews has left his family "shaken," according to Jermaine. He recounts the family coming together after the death of brother Tito's ex-wife in the mid 1990s and finding Michael sitting on a bed with Tito's young sons and holding them in a disturbing manner.

Jermaine also dished about the singer's bizarre behavior shortly before he surrendered to authorities to face charges in November 2003.

Holed up in a Las Vegas hotel room, Michael calmly watched a "Pinocchio" DVD with his three children in his lap, but he later flew into a rage, trashing the room and breaking every glass, lamp and dish in it.

The protective big brother vowed to help Michael beat the rap because "Michael couldn't survive one day in prison ... He'd commit suicide."

Other bombshell teasers in Jermaine's outline include:

That during the Jackson 5 days, Michael's brothers feared he was gay. The brothers met lots of women while touring and all eventually fell in love. "But Michael, well, he wasn't interested. We used to quietly say that we couldn't have a gay brother."

Michael hates Jews because he thinks Hollywood moguls Steven Spielberg, Jeffrey Katzenberg and David Geffen stole the idea for Dreamworks studio, including the boy-on-the moon logo, from him.
"But the Jews are the powerful ones and they have done a lot to put my brother in his place ... just another n-----."

That a devious and calculating Michael squashed his brothers' solo musical careers.
But the family stood behind Michael despite pain, doubts and misgivings, unwilling to give up on "our little brother."
