~ Author Unveils Novel Based on Song by Neo-Soul Artist Erykah Badu ~

Bag Lady
Alethea Pascascio
ISBN:097783777
$14.95

What do you get when the theme of Erykah Badu’s song, Bag Lady, encounters the imagination of author, Alethea Pascascio? Bag Lady, the novel (Queen Publications, $14.95). And any novel named after an Erykah Badu song must be good.

This novel as well as the song addresses the difficult task of moving beyond the pain of our past into the positive possibilities of our future.

Badu’s song starts by telling women to hold on to themselves instead of their baggage. She goes on to inform them they can’t get anywhere because too much stuff is weighing them down. Then in no uncertain terms Ms. Badu’s melodious voice emphatically resounds that women’s baggage acts as a man repellent- it causes them to take off running.

In Pascascio’s novel, Faith Donnovan is a woman at the mercy of her past. Haunted by the dysfunction of her childhood, Faith finds that her compulsive behavior lands her in a series of bad relationships. It will take her almost three decades to begin the self-healing process that brings not only strength but the ability to make better choices. The story demonstrates how the affects of baggage from the past serves to destroy or hinder positive progression into the future.

“After writing the novel,” Pascascio said today, “I changed the title at least three times but I still wasn’t satisfied. I wanted the title to accurately depict the story. Then one day, some of the lyrics to Erykah Badu’s Bag Lady came to mind and I became elated. I couldn’t believe that the theme of her song fit my main character so perfectly. I knew immediately what the title had to be. Although, the song was released in 2000, the message is timeless. It’s as applicable today as it was six years ago.”

This novel will touch the lives of men and women who are still coping with issues from the past and provide insight into the freedom and well-being that will be experienced after unloading the ruinous baggage that has held them down.

"Bag Lady" can be ordered from Amazon.com and bookstores everywhere.

~ Summary/Synopsis:~
After three decades of utter dysfunction and regret, of bitter jealousy and shame, of broken hopes and intentions, can one really get a new lease on life? This is a question that Alethea Pascascio raises in her debut novel, Bag Lady, a true-to-life exploration of the ambitions and failures of womanhood in the 21st Century.

But Bag Lady is ultimately the story of one woman, Faith Donnovan. At thirty years of age, Faith finds herself at her grandmother’s funeral with a new man on her arm, Justin, an exotically eligible Central American, who might just be the one to finally make her happy. Faith’s sister Nicole’s jealousy is immediately apparent to all present, forcing Faith to remind her of all her past misfortune.

With this twist of sibling rivalry, the novel unfolds into a gripping account of Faith’s past, beginning with her troubled childhood in the home of an alcoholic and abusive step-father. The in-home flare-ups are too much for Faith who, like Nicole before her, gets pregnant and runs away from home, beginning the series of misfortune and missed opportunities that will weigh her down in a mire of emotional baggage.

After two disastrous marriages, an abortion and an unrelenting stream of personal dysfunction, she meets Justin, and at novel’s end she finds herself about to enter into a third marriage. Will the third time be the charm? Will Justin’s love and the budding love for herself give her enough strength to leave her baggage behind?

People are Saying…

“I've read stories similar to yours. Where yours is different and refreshing, I might add, is that the main character was determined not to let inferior men ruin her life. Most of these stories don't go that way. This novel will prompt people to confront issues in their own lives.” – Mike Valentino, Entrepreneur

“Bag Lady is an aspiring, thought provoking and touching story. Ms. Pascascio has written a novel that causes one to examine the baggage in (his/her) own life.” – Sean D. Young, Author of Total Bliss and With This Ring

“Congratulations, Alethea, on writing a very poignant and touching tale of love, heartache and healing! I've thoroughly enjoyed it.” – Colleen Wilson, Editor

“Your unique blend of word choices and familiar scenarios make each chapter so realistic. I was touched by some parts and angered by others. A book that appeals to many different emotions is worth reading. Bag Lady leaves you wanting to read more of Alethea Pascascio's works.” – Penny L. (Johannesburg, South Africa)
