Full article: http://bit.ly/8Q4JXF End of Kirkus Reviews Brings Anguish and Relief By MOTOKO RICH (December 12, 2009) The book industry, beleaguered by a battery of dispiriting news about lackluster sales and online price wars, got another taste of the apocalypse on Thursday with the news that Kirkus Reviews, the venerable prepublication review journal, was closing. |

Chris, I'll make a subtle distinction. Kirkus' demise is reflect the loss of another source of independent critical reviews. If Kirkus actually reviewed a significant number of Black books and independently published books (save Kirkus Discoveries) I would say there is more opportunity for AALBC.com. |

Troy, lets say that Chris and I were standing on the corner passing a bottle of Wild Irish Rose, okay. Lets also say that I get mad at Chris because he's drinking more than his fair share. I mean, 35 cents doesn't allow him to deep throat my wine. Anyway, lets say Chris gets mad at me and cuts me with that dull razor he carriers. Okay, I am fading in and out of conscientiousness. Could you please return and tell me what you are really trying to say. I mean, I kind of got lost after "subtle distinction". Are you saying that Kirkus' was much like a good boxer? Did they stick and move, and thus didn't do a lot of reviews? You know, like... play to their crowd. Well, I'm just asking. I've seen many boxers pick and chose their opponents. I'm just askin' Are you sort of, kind of, almost saying this? I know you are a business man but I need my funk uncensored. |

Carey, sorry. Kirkus does not review book by Black people. AALBC.com does. Therefore there is no opportunity for additional business. But actually I need to draw another distinction. Kirkus, like AALBC.com reviews books that they chose to review "Kirkus Reviews" and they reviewed books that authors/publishers paid to have reviewed "Kirkus Discoveries". On both fronts however there was little overlap that I was aware of. I think on the fee based side I offered a better service: Faster turn around time, lower cost, reviews longer in length, and more exposure to a better targeted audience. On the free side Kirkus reviewed many more books (through I suspect AALBC.com reviewed more Black books) and Kirkus was more widely respected and known in the broader industry. I'm also pretty sure AALBC.com pays reviews more to write a review and Kirkus. At the end of the day, my reviews are still available to readers. While the future of Kirkus reviews is questionable. |
