Hello All, You all know that I was cleaning up my library a few months ago. I ran into my copy of Pillar of Fire: America in the King Years; 1963-65 by Taylor Branch. I hadn't read it, you know, due to my thick book phobia. But, now, I'm thinking about tackling the book. I did not know that the book is part of a series, which started with Parting The Waters. So, I am asking if anyone here have read any or the complete series by Branch? I'm wondering if its worth reading the series, I can't just read a part of it and stop. |

Thumper: It is definitely worth reading the whole series. I did not read them in order, and unless you have a strong need for chronological order, I suggest you do not necessarily do so either. I began with "Pillar," thinking I'd connect with it since it begins when I was born. Then I worked my way back to "Parting." I have "Canaan's Edge" but never finished it. Now that you've put it back in my mind, I think I'll put the book back in my must-read queue. Regarding your "thick book phobia" where these books are concerned: Do not think of them as "books," but as collections of short stories. Really, that is what they are--a collection of narratives about these historical periods. |

Hello All, Yvettep: Thanks! OK, I'll start with Pillar and work myself around to the others. You know, it seems to me that the older I get, the more history books I want to read. The other day I bought The Wilderness Warrior, a biography of Theodore Roosevelt?? I've bought that Abraham Lincoln book by Ronald White a few months ago. Where in the hell did all of this come from, I can not tell you. I'm just going to have to suck it up that I'm getting old as hell. If I'm not worried about when my testicles are going to hit the floor when I sit down, I'm fighting with the hair that is determined to grow on my ears! I have a new respect for my Ol' Grayhead now. |

Well, I kept on living and now what aint started to sag, hair is growing on it. I'm giving you your props. *big smile* |

And what parts would that be, ol'naughty Doctor? I don't know about you and Thump. Well, I know one thing. I'm never going to watch a movie with you two. Nope, SAW-VI is in the theaters but I don't want to see any hairy draggin things while watching my movies. And I don't even know what Yvettep is trying to grow. I don't think she's talking about popcorn. Nope, I think I'll stay away from Mortissa and the rest of the Adams Family *lol*. |
