There is a grassroots effort to make E. lYnn Harris last novel:
Mama Dearest
(Sept. 22, 2009 from Karen Hunter Publishing) a #1 NY Times Bestselling book.

I understand that this is an unrealized goal of E. Lynn (many authors I'm sure). People close to him feeel this would be a greeat way to honor his name.

I'm all for anything that shows our collective strength in a positive manner. Plus E. Lynn's next book will be published by Karen Hunter publishing.

At any rate, show your support and our strength by buying the book.

What a silly request. The man is dead. If there is no afterlife then it is meaningless. If there is, same thing.

They ought to be praying for his soul if they really want to do something for him.

On top of that, I don't care for his books and wouldn't buy one just on the outside possibility that his book might be #1 on the list.

But I won't stop them if they want to do it.

Why not do this. Why don't all these people who love him so much get together and buy a million copies of the book?

Chris I hear you.

One could even argue that if there IS an after life this would be meaningless as well.

But you miss the point.

Anything can be miscontrued negatively.

One could even say Troy is exploiting the situation to earn more comissions on books, or that the publisher is doing the same to capitalize on sales and gain additional notoriety.

But that is a very cynical view. It unfortunately people view things like this in such a fashion.

As I indicated, I'm motivated by seeing the impact of us flexing our muscles. Pointing to the fence, with the bases loaded, before the pitch is thrown, and whacking it for a home run. As we did with the Montgomery Bus Boycott, the Million Man March (at least the marching part), and Obama's election.

There will ALWAYS be the myopic haters who fail to see the bigger picture because of their own issues.

Of course everyone's help is desired and needed, but it is unrealistic to expect this with any group larger than a handful of people...

But at least, Chris, you are not getting in the way; because there are those among us who will actively try to thwart the effort. Which is worse than doing nothing at all.

Becoming #1 on the NY Times bestseller lists means nothing if this accomplishment is not achieved by the voluntary desire of readers to buy a book.

I agree with Chris. The man is dead. This effort is not about bestowing a well-deserved honor on someone posthumously. It's a gesture having to do with fulfilling the wish of an individual who never earned this ranking while alive.

Call me "cynical".

Cynique I would not expect anything less from you. ;-)

The effort is voluntary. No more than attendance at the million man march or a vote for Obama was. No strong arm tactics or guilt trips are being applied.

This is just a call to focus our money toward this specific goal.

I'm not 100% of the intention of the organizers, but this effort is bigger than E. Lynn, in the sense that if we can demonstrate our power here, perhaps we can do it for any "deserving" (for lack of a better word) authors.

Money talks. Bullshit walks; and I'm tired of walking.

If this was a campaign was started by the publisher, it's a clever (and arguably unethical) move. Everyone knows the death of an artist increases the value of his art. Some artists have even faked their own deaths in attempts to increase the value of their work.

Though the author may be deceased, the publisher will still get paid.

One could even say Troy is exploiting the situation to earn more comissions on books

(This would be okay, since I know you and love you and this wouldn't be hurtin' me none and would hurt others very little)

that the publisher is doing the same to capitalize on sales and gain additional notoriety.

(This ain't okay. Screw the publisher. They made enough money off E. Lynn, probably screwed him over in royalty payments and undercounting.

It might be okay too if he had family the money might go to. Or a charity.

Other than that--

They got a saying, "give me my flowers while I can see them". It would have been great if E. Lynn's fans had thought enough of him to do this while he was alive.

Now? I dunno....)

Emanuel, the publisher did not initiate this campaign. It was initiated by close friends of E. Lynn's.

I did not know E. Lynn. I only met him twice, the last time over 5 years ago. Honestly I'm not even sure how fond Harris was of AALBC.com after we published an unfavorable review of his some years ago.

Again, this effort, in my mind, is bigger than E. Lynn. Others may be doing it soley for Harris. I am not. I'm doing it for Harris, myself and the rest of y'all -- even if you don't get down with us.

I attended the E. Lynn Harris event a the Borders Book store at the Capital Center Blvd. It was hosted by Victoria Christopher Murray and Kimberla Lawson Roby (pictured above) and I just puchased my copy of Harris' Mama Dearest

I understand we have until TODAY for ourchases to count toward the next bestsellers list. The first week of the book's publication is the most important week for accomplishing this goal
