What's up Peeps,

I just finished the rough draft of my next novel about the joining and unravelling of the relationships of three couples. I'm sending it to an independent editor in a couple of weeks. It's only about 50,000 words. Do you think I can sell it at its present length to a traditional publisher? If not, what advice do you have on lengthening it?

I don't want to add boring filler just to lengthen it to sell. I believe it reads pretty well as is.

I'm looking forward to all of your responses.

(You have to check with the publisher and see what word length novels they want.

Most of the guidelines I see are asking for 60-80,000

On the whole, if it is a fantastic story, they will snap it up at any length--

Of course it is damn nigh impossible to tell you how to lengthen a work I have not seen--but I will try--if you have to lengthen it add a a 15,000 word sub plot and a 15,000 word flashback.

Chris,

Thanks for the response. Adding flashbacks did cross my mind. I don't know about a 15000-word flashback but it's an idea.

Most of the guidelines I have been reading say 60K to 100K. Hopefully, I can get to the lower end of that spectrum.

The good thing is, I'm in no hurry to get it published before getting it right.

If Joyce can write a four page sentence you can write a 15,000 word flashback.

Almost at 60,000 words now. Now it's time for query letters and rejection letters. Gotta psyche myself out for it.
