Hello All, It was bound to happen. Barnes and Noble online, now has a free, I said it, free downloadable eReader. You can choose to have an eReader downloaded on you PC/mac, blackberry, or iPhone or touch iPod. You get 6 free download books. Naturally, I love the price. I love the flexibility of having it on your blackberry or PC. B&N will sell you eBooks at the same price Amazon.com will. But here, it doesn't have to be on a $299 Kindle. I'm going to check it out. |

Thumper, my fuzzy little friend, you are completely missing the point of the Kindle ebook reader... The device itself uses a technology that makes reading books a lot easier on the eyes. That makes a big difference. Plus a charge will last through a two week vacation, plus you can download books directly to the devie via the free internet access. |

Hello all, *big smile* But Troy, I can adjust the print of the book on my laptop; thereby, making it easier for me to read. I can say this because my laptop is a convertible, meaning that I can use it as a standard laptop or turn the monitor over the keyboard and use it as a PC tablet. So, my display screen is larger than the Kindle. I will concede the point about the battery life. But, I'm looking at my checking account and the multipurpose of the device. I have bought iPods for the price of a Kindle but there are a lot of functions to the iPod besides playing music. I can spend a few hundered dollars more and get a laptop and still have more functions to use on it than a Kindle. But purchasing a Kindle can only do one thing read the ebooks/emagazines from Amazon.com. If you have an iPhone or a blackberry or carry around a laptop or a netbook why get another device to lug around if you don't have to? But, if Amazon would drop that price to $100 or lower, I would consider getting one. But now that B&N done came out with this, that proposition is looking mighty shakey. |

Yeah if price is you primary consideration one would never need kindle. But I would not exactly consider it a luxury item. But if you are the type to run about with a high capacity Ipod, a feature rich telephone and a laptop - adding a lindle on top of that would be over kill... I'm on my way to ATL for the National Book Club Conference. I will probably not bring my kindle. I have two book sthat I want to get through: Sugar of the Crop: My Journey to Find the Children of Slaves by Sana Butler http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/1599213753/ref=nosim/aalbccom-20 and The Big Machine by Victor Lavalle http://aalbc.com/authors/victordlavalle.htm --both Hardback books. I brought one at a recent book event the other was sent to me by the publiusher. I wish I had both on my Kindle -- cause I'm not carry two Hardback book AND a Kindle. It would be nice if the publishers gave readers rights to use the kindle version when you brought the hardcover version. Admittedly, my kindle does not get used as much as it should -- I keep acquiring paper books! |

Gentlemen, my local library has just begun offering e-books. The software was quite simple to download and the pages are completely adjustable. I was quite impressed by the number of titles they have. I, too, will only consider buying a Kindle or other device when/if the price comes WAY down. |

Well like with all technology, the price will come way down for the reader. I'm not sure if the same will hold true for the ebooks. Maybe eBooks will be like razor blades and printer cartridges. The reader will be a very inexpensive loss leader and we'll get raped on the eBooks. |
