Hey Folks, I was just chatting with a writer friend on this subject. I want to know the likelihood of supporting yourself completely off of your book-writing income. There are many bestselling and midlist authors who work day jobs, have a side hustle, start their own ventures, or rely on a spouse's income. What known authors can you think of who live completely off of their book writing? What known authors can you think of that supplement their income. What is that supplemental income? |

What known authors can you think of who live completely off of their book writing? "All the writers I know have day jobs or side hustles, but I live in St. Louis, a savage and illiterate hellhole. I can think of no writer today living completely off book writing? Even the best sellers do readings, product tie ins, special appearances, consulting. Nobody else is making enough money to. What known authors can you think of that supplement their income. What is that supplemental income? "All of them do. In my neck of the woods a teaching gig is the most common" |

I see where you are coming from, but the question is somewhat flawed in the sense that many people supplement there income regardless of vocation. Plus there are so many factors which determine what income a person needs, that the question almost becomes illerelavent. there are indeed authors out there who could "live" purely off book income, but like many of us they speak, teach and do other things -- even if they do not "need" to, so they may not be readily identifiable. I suspect fantastically sucessful authors like Malcolm Gladwell makes such a big percentage of his revenue through speaking so much so he could forego the book income |

Zane, Tananarive Due/Steven Barnes "Wrong on these three. Zane makes money from product promotion, ancillary income (tv show), web site, personal appearances, and she did have her own book store" Tananareve Due does book readings--paid--I saw her myself here in St. Louis Steve Barnes has this Lifewriting thing, paid personal appearances, and has worked with gamers." |

Add to the list Connie Briscoe (http://aalbc.com/authors/connie.htm), who has been living as a writer for over a decade. Chris I believe the spirit of E's question was "could" a writer live solely off writing income, rather than if they actually do. In that sense I would dismiss Libralind2's response. Living completely off writing is a difficult, but attainable goal. |
