...to reading two novels that have been on my must-read list for a long while: Caucasia by Danzy Senna and Hottentot Venus by Barbara Chase-Riboud Any thoughts on either book? Any other ideas for books from years past that folks may have missed? |

I thought Caucasia was okay. I'm contemplating checking out her recently published memoir, Where Did You Sleep Last Night?. http://www.smithmag.net/memoirville/2009/05/26/interview-danzy-senna-author-of-w here-did-you-sleep-last-night/ |

I liked -- Gabrille Pina's work - Chasing Sophea and Bliss. Both stories involve the lives of Black women - young adult and adult life - family secrets and conquering personal demons. WOW, she writes really well - along the lines of a Maryse Conde. |

I've picked up Hottentot Venus and put it back a couple of times at the library thinking I'll get it later. Guess I should move it up the list a bit. Thanks for adding another author to my list Soul Sister! After The Book of Night Women and Bernice McFadden’s Nowhere Is a Place I’ve had my share of slavery stories for a long time. To lighten it up I read Due’s Blood Colony – really enjoyed it. It’s been so long since I read The Living Blood that I’d forgotten it’s a series. Now, I’m reading Hater by David Moody – another sci fi about folks who for no reason and with no warning start violently killing others. Kinda creepy. But I didn’t read the cover carefully and now I’m half way through I see it’s the first of a trilogy so I guess I’ll have to keep reading to find out what it’s all about. |
