Johnson Publishing Co. Called "Under Siege" http://mije.org/print/583 From the article: They have a set of challenges that go beyond those of companies that are not black-owned,' says Ken Smikle, president and publisher of Chicago-based Target Market News, which monitors African-American media. Advertisers are slashing budgets that already were under-allocated to black-targeted media, he says — 'all those things coming at a time when the company had invested in upgrading their magazines,' Mr. Smikle says. [Smikle bought Black Issues Book Review in 2006 and said in April he would have a statement soon on the future of the publication, which has not appeared in more than a year.] |

One of their big problems is that Ebony Magazine stinks (Jet was always about the pictures anyway) I can't remember the last time I read one and I used to subscribe to both of them. It is a damn shame when better black articles appear in white magazines like Newsweek and Rolling Stone. It may be too late for them. |

Ebony magazine was tailored to appeal to the unsophisticated black masses. It was family-oriented, - more about touting black achievements and promoting black pride and was never meant to be a hip, show biz magazine. Recently it had revamped its format and was showing signs of life. Hopefully it can survive because it really is a national treasure. |

Chris Ebony's biggest problem is that they are a magazine. An increasingly difficult business. Cynique, I liked the old version of Ebony better. Much less focus on celebrity more coverage of our accomplishments in business, the arts, community, etc. Today it looks like a warmed over version of Essence. I stopped subscribing. I still have a subscription to Jet. The pinup is the first thing I look at. They also have a featured called where are they now -- which is pretty cool, and always upbeat. There is always a couple of copies bathroom. |
