Hi Linda, Great job on your project, but I somehow got the idea that you were writing a book about it? I don't know now what made me think that. Anyway, thanks for letting me know you were finished with the project. Best of luck with it! |

Hello Linda I am like A_womon, I thought you were doing a book? Anyway, I am going to play the part of disenting voice and maybe some questions can be answered. What is the basic compliant of the town residents? Is it the way the police invaded the town? Is it because of the number of shots fired into the victim? If any of those complaints apply. I would think there's a valid argument against them. In reference to the number of shots fired, it can be assumed that the victim fired early in the exchange because of the wounding of the police officer. I say assumed because it's possible he was shot by one of his own, since I doubt the bullets in his body were ever matched against those of the victim? However, if I look at the big picture a valid argument would say that since automatic weapons were being used and all being fired at the same time, it's not like eaach officer was waiting in line to take a shot. When a gun fight breaks out, everyone shots at the same time. I hear the argument that "they" didn't have to shoot him that many times, yet in the scope of things, "they" didn't. Another question: Why didn't they take the shot officer to the closer hospital? Also, who was responsible for displaying his body in the condition mentioned. What was the purpose? Was it hard to find people to talk about this event? What's your connection to this story? Why did you chose this project? |

Hello Everyone Well, let me try to answer some of these questions. (LOL) I have also written the book which will be released August 3, 2009. As for some of your questions Carey, let me give it a shot: You are correct in identifying the complaints of the towns people. The reason he was not taken to the all black ran hospital was racial. Yes, some of the people were very hard to interview. Many would not even talk about it on camera for fear of being recognized by white patrolmen who still live in surrounding counties. I'm not sure why my mind steered me to Mound Bayou. I knew no one there prior to my visit. But everytime I passed it in my travels it seemed to call me. So, I planned a trip and went. Willie's sister Mary came up from Memphis when the local historian whom I had contacted prior to my visit told her I was coming to town. Since that first visit I fell in love with Mound Bayou and felt a pride and connection to it. As you know I have helped raise money for the town (thanks to all who donated) in an effort to help get a roof for the old hospital, books for the school, and recognition to the plight of poverty that the town now faces. |
