I've exhibited 3 years in a row. But this year, for the first time in 10 years, I did not even register for BEA. I only reason I attended this year was to accept an award in the African American Pavilion. Every year at Book Expo America, I visit every booth at the African American Pavilion -- even when I exhibited. I get to know the vendor, take photographs and or video. This year I could not stop at every booth. I already knew several of the vendors so I tried to hit a least a few that I did not know. I approached a booth and asked the person there, a guy in his 50's or 60's, if it would be OK to shoot the booth for my website. The question was asked more out of politeness and respect; as it is like asking "may I purchase one of your books." A typical response to this query is, "of course" or "tell me about your site". However this guy said, "well the owner does not want his company on just any site". I thought about the time it would take me to edit the video or even simply post a photo on the site and replied, "no problem" and moved on. Authors, publishers I cannot think of any circumstance where refusing free publicity for your book or business is a good idea. |
