An interesting article in Publisher's Weekly points out that POD book titles produced in 2009 surpassed the number of tradionally published titles. Traditional publishers decreased the number of titles they introduced and futher narrowed the funnel for new writers looking to break through. The new technology available today allows authors other avenues to get their work in print. It is like a squeezing a balloon, when you squeeze one end, the other end grows. Writers will continue in their desire to be published and now they have options and are using them. http://www.publishersweekly.com/article/CA6659193.html www.TARPTownUSA.com |

There are also a trend toward authors published by major houses to publishing their own work including Tina McElroy Ansa, Gloria Mallette, Persia Walker and others To better understand the trend, it would be interesting to know a few things; (1) How many different authors were published by the majors versus the independents; (2) how many books were actually printed and (3) how many book were sold by each group of publishers. |

Hello All, I'm a little curious. From the article, it states that the number of on demand titles increased while traditional publishing houses titles decreased. What was the SALES of the on demand titles compared to the traditional titles? |

Hey All: Wow! I haven't posted in a while. I read something about traffic being down. As for me, most of my online time has been on Facebook. Offline, I've been too busy writing and meeting with my local writers group. Not a big surprise regarding education titles doing better. In a recession, people tend to seek more or a different education to increase their economic possibilities. The big deal is this: authors are less patient with traditional pubishers that could take years to accept and print an author's book. So many are taking matters into their own hands. Also many authors don't even know how to go about getting published traditionally. Some think paying someone to publish your work is the norm and they don't know a thing about querying literary agents or publishers. Going it your own is still way too gloried. Self-pubbing continues to be an ego trip for many authors who want to be entrepeneurs yet too many of those individual titles simply don't sell more than what family and friends buy. So who's getting paid? Subsidy publishers, traditional publishers using POD technology, graphic designers that design covers and websites, and Bowker selling all of those ISBN numbers. Meanwhile, authors are trying to push those titles without marketing budgets or distribution while still working those day jobs. (Of course, there are other rewards outside of money.) |

Thump, I would bet "traditional publishing houses" use POD technology when it makes sense. I consumers are pretty much oblivious to the POD/traditional print run issue -- so they don;t impact demand very much. Until POD unit costs are closer to that of traditional print run. Major publishers house will have an advantage -- due primarily to scale... But POD books will continue to cut into the sales of big houses. Hey E, I too have been spending time on Facebook. However in addition to using it to socialize online. Ive been trying to use it to promote my work here. Facebook provides no stats so it is difficult to gauge the value of my efforts but indication are that there is some benefit, similar to that of Myspace when it was new. |

Traditional houses are using POD for their long tail business with low volume and out of print titles. www.DTPollard.com |
