When Life Becomes A Love Story started as Matthews’ own effort to heal and recovery from her traumatic past. “I started journaling for my own survival. I had no control over my life and I didn’t know why. I forced myself to write until it became clear. For ten years I relived my most painful experiences. I was forced to be honest and confront my feelings. I couldn’t hide anymore. I was fighting for my life. I had to take control. Through writing, I realized that family meant a lot to me but that my definition of family was very narrow. Eventually, I realized that it was okay to look beyond the limbs of my tree to get what I needed. Once I did, I found sisters, brothers, cousins, aunts, uncles, and, yes, even the paternal and maternal figures I’d always longed for.
