Hello Everyone, I have been away for a while and from the looks of things I have missed some really hot topics! I just wanted to share some photos of a book launch event that we did with Her Excellency EJS President of Liberia for the In the Cafe with Mocha television show. The planning really kicked my behind for a moment there but now I can come up for air! Wonderful Person, great book, please take a look at some of the pictures from the event below. Ill let you know when/where you can see the final edited video. Take Care, Missed Y'all! http://gallery.me.com/fotobriceno#101884 |

I saw the discussions, pretty heated and pretty passionate both here and in the other room. Ouch on many levels is all I can say You should definatley try the book, Liberia has a very interesting history and she does a great job of laying the foundation so that you really understand the underlying reasons for their 14 year war. She is a very cool lady, very intelligent and warm. She was on the John Stewart Show on Thursday and actually made him a Chief. And yeah, thats me in the green |

Mocha Mint, from what I've seen of her, she seems to be exactly how you discribed her "very intelligent and warm". In the program that I saw, she seemed to be well liked by her countrymen. Her governing style seemed to be much like President Obama. I mean, she appeared to be one of the people. In one segment I saw her getting her dance on. In another I saw her speaking to the people like one would do in the kitchen. I don't know much about their war but I will assume it's about money and power. What is the major exports or money supply for that country? Hey, I ain't trying to bring no mess in your thread but I KNOW you don't have a problem with being dark and lovely. Well, I'll just say from my vantage point ....you looking good girl. |

If that's you in the green dress, then mocha describes your tone perfectly. Your rich creamy browness puts you in an enviable category. Your color is not an issue. And your bright smile says it all. |

Thank you Carey and Cynique for your very kind words, sounds like that thread hit a lot of raw nerves. I am going to go back and re-read it to find out what really happened... Carey, the war was in its most simple explanation was about class. There are indigenous Liberians and what are called "Americo-Liberians" decendents of freed American slaves who were sent back to Africa with the permission/expense of the US Government. Of course many of these now freed slaves were generations removed from Africa and basically thought of the indigenous. It did not help that the US government established a government system that mirrored that of the US and placed the freed slaves in positions of power to rule over this newly settled land of Liberia. After years and years of simmering animosity as most oppressed people usually do, they rebelled. This led to 14 years of coups, corrupt government, and extreme poverty. When Ellen came into power she had a country that had no electricity or running water for 8 years, no school systems in place, 90% unemployment rate, debt 30 times more than the annual budget. What is so interesting is that you find alot of American last names over there because of its history, names like Johnson, Cooper, Clarke etc. Also to answer your question about their main exports, mostly agriculture but Firestone runs their largest African plant out of Liberia. |

DAMN! "no electricity or running water for 8 years, no school systems in place, 90% unemployment rate, debt 30 times more than the annual budget"!!! "Firestone runs their largest African plant out of Liberia" I think I remember hearing some of the problems associated with that. I mean, more money, more power, more problems. I thought I heard about some sort of polution as well. "It did not help that the US government established a government system that mirrored that of the US and placed the freed slaves in positions of power to rule over this newly settled land of Liberia" Play that song again! Hey Mocha, I'd like to do a blog on her and link it back to you and the book. Let me know if it's okay. If so, how do I link to you. The piece will not solely be about her, but your post has inspired me to write one called "what if" |

Liberia is interesting on SO many levels. I think a blog on her will be really good, I am glad she wrote this book so that people can really understand whats going on over there. There's not a whole lot of good that you can say Bush did during his years in the White House but he certainly was a friend to Liberia and tried to undo the wrongs of the Reagan years. Very interesting book, I'm sure you can order it on this site, its as interesting a story as it is a history lesson. I look forward to reading "What if". The video is still in post production so we are waiting on that to update the site. Now if you link it to us there's not really much there |
