Comedian Steve Harvey's recent #1 New York Times bestselling book, Act Like a Lady, Think Like a Man, is embroiled in a bit of controrversy. It seems that a Chicago Author, Sharon P. Carson, self-published a book with a the title, Act Like a Lady, Think Like a Man in 2003. She has read Harvey's book and her take on it is below. Harvey was recently on Oprah twice due to the positive response from women viewers. Could Oprah be involved in yet another book backlash? http://www.prlog.org/10191232-did-steve-harvey-copy-the-book-title-act-like-lady -think-like-man.html www.DTPollard.com |

The other nationally-syndicated black DJ, Tom Joyner, has just been booted off his Chicago outlet and, amid the outcry of his angry fans, has been replaced by Steve Harvey, who many black listeners don't like because of how "ghetto" and "country" they think he comes across as on his radio show. But apparently, the success of his book has enhanced his bankability in the eyes of white programmers. If these allegations about Harvey are true, it will be interesting to see how all of this plays out. |

Doesn't sound like plagiarism to me. You can't copyright a book title. And one coincidental conclusion in one chapter doesn't make for a good case. |

Yeah. He can copy a book title. They are not copyrightable. The publicity will probably boost his sales. |

Is it crazy to think that two books with the same title might have the same theme? Helloooo? Like it has already been said, book titles are not held by copyright. I have heard Steve talk about publishing this book since he started the radio show especially after giving advice during the Strawberry letter. This could just be hype for the author to tie her book of the same title to some publicity. I love this part, "she was hoping for perhaps some recognition that the idea for the book might have come from her." |

The title: Act Like a Lady, Think Like a Man is a common pun or over old cliché, like many book titles. However I think the publicity may probably boost her sales too. I think we would all be better off if women acted like ladies and thought like ladies. Of course if the fellas acted and thought like men that would help as well. |

I think we would all be better off if women acted like ladies and thought like ladies. Of course if the fellas acted and thought like men that would help as well. (What is a lady? Isn't this a variable, artificial societal construct that changes with the wind? And why did you say "fellas" should think like "men" as opposed to gentlemen/ Why didn't you say females should act like women? I know your base is female but we should use the proper terminology and not pander. All the fellas I know act like men--which some say may be part of the problem--if you take "man" as meat eating, violent screw anything he can being--like James Bond and John Wayne. |

And, on top of it all, isn't "lady" a male created construct to constrict the role and power of the female. I am sure that the demand that females act like ladies would mean we could have no Harriet Tubman, Fannie Lou Hamer, Zane, Kola Boof, Cynique, etc. |

Chrishayden, so if I understand you correctly; are you implying that the roles of men and women are completely identical, or should be in an ideal world? I’m not sure how YOU define the role of a female or lady, but to suggest that Tubman, Hamer, Zane, or Cynique are outside my definition of what a woman should be is absurd. |

Glad you wrote that the way you did, Troy Johnson. So am "I" outside your definition of what a FEMALE is? I notice you left my name out of the lineup and none of the others. Please make sure you answer this question, Troy, because I have a prurient legal reason for asking it. It DOES seem to be my (and other people's) recollection that you have DOUBTS about me being a "Woman/Female"
You being such an EXPERT on my sexuality. Right Troy Johnson? (NO,NO...don't delete this post, Troy. BE A MAN ABOUT THIS, DADDY! And besides, this could be very helpful to the POLICE down the line--since it contains what could be later documented as "threats"....and I am, according to your Professional (and quite public) diagnosis, CRAZY--right?) PLEASE, Troy--this post should stand as a Record for the POLICE and shouldn't be deleted; I insist on it. **To the person who alerted me to this exchange and is aware of the case I'm building--THANK YOU for alerting me to this tiny insignificant little tidbit. And since I've opened the gate and come in your yard...I may as well come up on the porch and in true "Kola BiT-ch" fashion further add-- That with such luminous names as Harriet Tubman, Fannie Lou Hammer, Cynique and KOLA BOOF --women who were/are ABOUT SOMETHING and use their lives in the service of issues and works that are about something far bigger than themselves.... ....it's ZANE's cowardly, two-faced, mousy little WEAK ass whose name just doesn't fit with the rest of ours. Not sorry I fukked her husband. Not in the least. WANNA SUE ME FOR THAT ZANE? For giving him some of this "good stuff?" Perhaps if you could see beyond your Protruding Belly you'd be able to "crunch" some tightness back into that soggy little stretched out kitten... But then of course, ZANE--- if there was really somebody who wanted to fukk your fat ass, you wouldn't have time to write four books a year ---right? Rich and powerful though you may be, QUEEN HAMSTER-HEAD... you're an awfully stupid little CURB to make a woman like me your enemy. No-talent nasty Bi/tch. It wasn't MY FAULT what happened with your husband. I didn't even know it was your husband. But now that you tried to hurt my children while yours are sitting up fat and fed ----your little Scheme for "revenge" is going to be like a basket ball going down your throat once I get done making you swallow it. Several bookstores told me what you did, ZANE. With you...I'll take my time. LASTLY, Troy Johnson (and since I'm here for the moment) --- there is a difference between a "Woman/ Female" (biological) and a "LADY" (which as Chris Hayden wrote is a "social construct" allowing to BEHAVIOR--not biology.) And he's right about something else (and you really should read Alice Walker) ---but most feminists DETEST being called "ladies." Call me a "womanist" or a "mother"--the two things that I am. From an intellectual point of view---do you understand the difference between biology and "acting out"? I am extremely saddened for the confrontation that you and I are headed to, Troy Johnson. From the bottom of my heart I weep. But what you've done against me--I intend to give it back to you 10 times over. We've got what? The next 20 to 40 years for me to get this hurt and betrayal and all that it's done to my children and their welfare--and NOT you and Zane's children--out of my system? Just make sure you protect your "BALLS" Troy Johnson--since you actually have a pair. Because that's what I usually bite off and swallow when my "moment" presents itself. And after all these years my record is flawless, Short Stop. More than the Lord and more than Taxes... ...you can have faith in that. (*You and Zane really should report this post to the POLICE. You know how I love hearing from them. After being with Somi, they're like "boy scouts" to me. A good laugh. But still, you and Queen Hampster-Head would be WISE to report this bit of unpleasantness.)

Ahhh, correction: But then of course, ZANE--- if there was really somebody who wanted to fukk your fat ass, you wouldn't have time to write four books a year Should be: you wouldn't have time to TYPE four books a year. . |

I could say that you think like a woman when you accuse me of thinking like a man, Chrishayden. I've always detected wuss tendencies in you; especially when you go into your sob sister act about the "poor picked-on victims" who are the object of Bill Cosby's wrath. In some instances, however, I do think like a man. It's a defense mechanism. |

Harriet Tubman, Fannie Lou Hamer, Zane, Kola Boof, Cynique, etc (I suppose some clarification is in order. I was, in referring to these ladies in this respect-- I am old enough to have the idealized, classical, almost mummified now notion of a lady. She is always powdered, perfumed, faints at strategic moments, always lets a man know he's a man at the right time. This is a male construct I admit, that seeks to define the female--which for non females to do is preposterous. A real lady, as always, has been one who declares herself a lady. Walks and talks herself a lady. On her grounds. It is not fainting behavior. Though women throughout history have proven that they can carry the wieght when the chips are down (when lots of men can't)we have, and we have still, a defective female prototype. That's all I'm saying. |

Did anyone else here get an email/press release seemingly from the author of this other book, Sharon Carson? I did. It arrived in my Spam folder, probably because the subject heading was simply "blog". I can only guess that I received this because of my participation at AALBC (even though I didn't comment on this particular thread)...and my B*tch blog gig? Hmmm.... |

The (email) plot thickens...now there's an email going around which purports to have SH's entire book attached in PDF form. That's gotta hurt...(the bottom line, that is). I guess it's the print version of the bootleg DVD. |
