Actually there is a new controversy in my neck of experience related to this. Folks writing their dissertations will hire "editors"--Some do just your basic rah-rah, looks good, circle a typo or two and there seems to be little problem with that. (Although it is still out of the norm for students, who are generally only supposed to do this type of thing with their advisor/committee members and other grad students.)

But then some people have gone a bit further and had these "editors" do a whole lot more. I once had someone say to me--jokingly, or at least half-jokingly--that I should help them in such a way with their dissertation. I think the shocked look on my face made them think twice aboiut pursuing the "joke" further.
