Hey ya'll. I'm new to this board but I just wanted to see how many of us are listening to Fela Kuti and are understanding his words. Some musicians considered him the African Bob Marley but once you start listening to his words you will soon realize that Bob Marley was really a Jamaican Fela Kuti!! Many musicians are into Fela but are too afraid to say so publicly. Why? Once you understand the music you will know. I even heard rumors that D'Angelo's next CD is going to borrow some of Fela's fire. If we can spread knowledge of Fela Kuti's music around the result might be a new level of black conciousness that the world as never seen before. Felas' musci is more relevant today than it was in the 70's!!Blacks have been so manipulated by western colonization we can't even see it. (Some of us think we know but if you really knew you would run to Africa today!!) This is like telling a fish what water is!! A fish would look at you like you were crazy thinking.."water is everything aint it?" It makes me want to cry when I look at the state of all black people and the fact that we are too srared (not lazy) to turn off the TV and radio in order to find out what's really happening to the "water" we live in. All the complaints we make about "the system" amount to nothing until we first realize what mental slavery really is and then we need to work hard to free ourselves from it. The Bible is right and all the churches are wrong. Will you be humble enough to admit this? I would like to propose we use this thread to figure out ways to get blacks to wake up!! I think Fela's music is a helping-start. You will run into problems finding Fela Kuti music in record stores simply because Our goverments(read as the Rich-class, African and non-African)don't want us to know what Fela sang about. I suggest you buy, borrow, download or whatever the "Best of Fela" CD. He was killed for his knowledge. But don't give up. Blacks have been conditioned to only like songs we sub-consciously recognize. Don't let this "Colonial" trick keep you from enjoying one of "God's" greatest gifts; Music! Please tell me what you think and better yet what you are doing to do to help. Please feel free to disagree with me, cause lawd knows I'm not the smartest cookie in the jar, but please offer something I can learn from. There is really not much time left. Africa is dying, and her children don't even know their mothers name!! You gotta hand it to "the Devil". He got it popin' & lockin' and, we right where he wants us. That's my 2 cents worth.
