I don't think Whoopie's free speech was actually compromised. Slim Fast probably felt that she could say whatever she chose say, - but not as their spokesperson. Apparently, in their eyes, her inappropriate remarks jeopardized their image and their profits, and because of this they chose to no longer keep her in their employ. It's all about the Benjamins, naturally.
And, in the expedient world of politics, Whoopie and other celebrities could very well become liablitites to the Democratic party. People tend to resent the idea that those from the entertainment world think they can influence how others vote.
