This article is an example of a new form of analytical research falling under the "freakonomic" umbrella. This method simply observes what a collection of random events have in common.

These researchers come up with things like how all hockey stars are born in a certain month, something which allowed them as children to try out earlier for a youth team, thus giving them a leg up on other kids who had to wait because their birth dates prevented them from making the dead line to be eligible, and this delay resulted in their falling behind in developing their skills.

This is the same mind-set that concluded that the crime rates fell after abortion was legalized because fewer women had babies they didn't want and couldn't discipline.
